Still on Track: Omaha Responds to Turnback Tax Setback

Nebraska's recent denial of Omaha's proposed "Turnback Tax" has raised questions about the project's future — but the City of Omaha says there's no cause for concern, maintaining that the project remains on track for an August 2027 opening.

The 2027 Opening Is Still Happening

Trails Have Our Respect is working on a larger update for the community on the trail system's2 redevelopment, including sharing conceptual images, here is the latest:

1) The trail system redevelopment was not part of the turnback tax proposal. While the decision may affect the scale and phasing of the soccer fields and other amenities, the trail system redevelopment is on a separate development track. The sanitary sewer pipeline projects under the park, which must be completed before the trails can be reconstructed, are well underway.

2) We have completed initial conceptual designs together with IMBA and Erin Rushing of OZTB Trail Consulting. High Level: trail mileage is increased; NICA and youth programs have more program and competition loops and options; skills progression and features are expanded, focused around multiple sessionable hubs; and the existing blue jump line is extended to 3x its original length with an optional expert extension. Existing trails are reused where possible, and the park continues to feature extensive traditional natural surface trails for walking, hiking, running, and family recreation.

3) The original trail system construction timeline remains focused around reopening the trails for the community, NICA competition, and other youth programs late summer / early fall 2027.
