Reinvisioning Omaha’s Legacy Natural Surface Trail System
Tranquility Park

Partners In Trails
THOR and Omaha Parks and Recreation are proud to announce our partnership in the redevelopment of Tranquility Park’s natural surface trail system.
As a phase of the broader Tranquility Park Improvement Project, we’ll be working together to reimagine, redesign, and rebuild a modern trail network that enhances access, sustainability, and recreation for all trail users.
This collaboration ensures that walking, running, hiking, and mountain biking will continue to be a defining part of Tranquility’s future—integrated with new park amenities and rooted in our shared values of stewardship, community, and connection to nature.
Overview & Announcement
Tranquility Park is one of Omaha’s largest and most ecologically significant parks—serving not only west Omaha, but also providing essential access to nature and recreation for residents across the city. As a hub for both organized sports and unstructured outdoor activity, the park plays a vital role in Omaha’s overall recreation system.
The current redevelopment plans for Tranquility Park—including sports field upgrades, expanded parking, and critical underground infrastructure improvements needed for a thriving city—create a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine, enhance, and fully integrate a modern natural surface trail system into the park’s evolving recreational landscape.
While some segments of the existing natural surface trail system are expected to remain largely intact, particularly in the “tree nursery” south of Fort Street on the west side of the park, the scale of the planned redevelopment and associated site work will significantly impact the legacy trail system. Grading, drainage shifts, vehicular access changes, and reconfigured land use will disrupt or eliminate key alignments, alter natural flows, and compromise the functionality of existing trails.
These cumulative impacts create the opportunity for a thoughtful reimaging of what a modern trail system and bike park at Tranquility Park can be.
THOR is pleased to lead the development of a Conceptual Master Plan for Natural Surface Trails at Tranquility Park in partnership with Omaha Parks and Recreation that awknowledges the clear community feedback from the Tranquility Project public engagement process, the goals of the Omaha Parks Master Plan, the recommendations of the Omaha Natural Surface Trails Feasibility Study, and the priorities of the Nebraska Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP).
This plan will ensure that high-quality, sustainable trail access for walkers, runners, hikers, and riders continues to be a defining feature of the park—one that enhances environmental stewardship, promotes community health, and celebrates Omaha’s identity as a great place to live and recreate outdoors.
